With the rise in popularity of dairy-free milk, we thought we’d take a look at what works best in coffee.
The most popular dairy-free milk is soy milk. Its been around for a long time. It’s popular in Asia and relatively easy to make. But its downside is it has a strong bean-like flavour that overtakes the taste of the coffee.
None in our list have added sugar.
So here we list our favourites
Almond milk has a subtle nut taste. Its creamy texture works well in coffee for lattes. It has the colour and consistency of milk with no grit. The flavour works very well with coffee
Cashew milk is the sweetest of the non-dairy kinds of milk. A higher fat content means is steams well. It does have a stronger nut flavour that can take over the coffee. But the sweetness and the nutty flavour work great in darker roasted coffees.
Oat milk has a very subtle taste, it also has the least effect on the flavour of the coffee. It’s more watery than the others so doesn’t froth very well unless you add some oil.
Best for frothing for coffee
We found the best for frothing for coffee was a mix of Almond and Cashew milk. The ratio we used was 80/20. It had the subtle nut taste we wanted and also the fat content to enable to get great steam on the milk for latte and flat whites.
Time to take control
So you can buy these milk (except our blend) in the supermarket but even these seemingly simple products have a major list of ingredients. From rapeseed oil to emulsifiers and phosphates.
