This will make a huge difference to your coffee
So you’ve decided to take the plunge into whole bean coffee and grind the coffee yourself.
Great!! The taste difference will be amazing.
Let’s look at the different types of coffee grinders and some of their benefits or not.
Blade grinders act like a lawnmower. They have a single blade that is sharp on the alternate sides and it spins very fast. The result is the coffee bean is sliced and chopped like you would a carrot with a knife.
The result is the grind is very uneven and won’t brew evenly. Imagine taking wheat and instead of milling it they chopped it up. It just wouldn’t work. Same with coffee.
A burr grinder acts like a crusher. It pulverises the coffee bean into a uniform particle size. It has 2 steel or ceramic burrs. They can come as flat or conical. Conical tends to be in domestic machines as they are quicker than flat burrs and can be run on smaller motors. Both are as good as each other, so don’t worry about getting flat or conical. As long as its burr your on the right path.
Blade grinders may be a lot cheaper than burr grinders, but buy once and buy right. Make sure you get a burr grinders for your next purchase.
